The Role of Employers in the Early Intervention of Mental Illness
Anita Ruff, MPH, MCHES – Deputy Director of Administration at
the MMC –Center for Psychiatric Research will share an employer/
employee outreach project that utilized web based surveys and
informational interviews to focus on mental health issues within the
workplace. Her discussion will include outcomes from the surveys and
recommendations for specific outreach to employers and employees.

Depression in the Workplace: Assistance for Employers
Scott Hutcherson, LCPC – Program Manager- Adult Counseling Services,
Community Counseling Center will discuss the prevalence and
common signs of employee depression and outline strategies for
employers to support employees via effective referral/initial
interventions, treatments and information on EAP services. He will
also discuss the role of clinical based and onsite depression screening
tools

Lunch/Networking/Community Assignment
During lunch we will show a 20 minute video “Believe in Me” that will
focus on learning the truth about mental illness. We will ask each of our
attendees to write down one action step they will bring back to their
communities to dispel myths around mental illness.

Connecting to Community- Healthy Maine Partnerships
Andy Finch LCSW – Senior Program Manager, Healthy Maine Partnerships
will share the work of the state wide Healthy Maine Partnerships
that collaborate with partners in their communities to promote
healthy places where people live, work, learn, and play. He will also
explore work being conducted by particular HMPs in depression and
help you connect with resources in your areas.
Building Resistance to Depression
John Weaver, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist will share the work of
The Healthy Thinking Initiative and its focus on teaching skills of
mindfulness, optimism and resilience, keys to building resilience to
depression in the workplace. Healthy thinking lifestyles promote
creativity, stress hardiness and engagement in a psychologically
healthy corporate culture.

Sustainable Stories: How a Small Coffee Company Learned to
Bring a Community Together ( and Continues to Learn Each Day)
Mary Allen Lindemann – Coffee By Design co-owner will provide
an overview of how she and her husband transformed their small Maine
company into an organization that recognized that becoming a mental
health friendly employer had an impact on both their employees and
their community In 2003 Coffee By Design was awarded the Small
Business of the Year Award by Aetna , Inc.

Finding the Win-Win in Workplace Intervention:
Helping Employees with Depression Function Better
While Reducing Employer Productivity Loss
Our keynoter will focus on why working-age adults with depression
experience higher than average rates of job loss, job turnover, premature
retirement, work absences and impaired work performance, which
harms employees and their families and results in billions of dollars annually
in lost productivity. She will share a new program, named Work
and Health Initiative that was pilot tested in Maine and demonstrated
improved employee work performance and productivity and reduced
depression symptoms.
